Bonus Round — High Knees

4 minute read

Quick Intro

Bonus Round is a high knees contest where the round’s loser gets the last word. Both partners do high knees for the same time, for example 30 seconds, each counting their own reps. They compare. The partner with more reps wins the round’s bragging rights. The partner with fewer reps then calls a bonus: “fifteen more seconds”. Both partners do the bonus together, side by side, and that closes the round.

Nobody does extra work alone. The partner who came second chooses the size of the final push, and both take it on together. It turns a small loss into a shared finish.

How to do high knees well, driving the knees up to about hip height on quick, light feet with the arms pumping, is taught at High Knees. This guide covers the game: counting, the bonus, the limits agreed before starting and the handicap.

What You’ll Need

  • Two people.
  • A cleared, stable, non-slip floor with room for both side by side.
  • A timer that both can hear.
  • A phone or paper to note the round results.

How to Play

  1. Agree the main interval, for example 30 seconds, the number of rounds and the longest bonus anyone can call.
  2. Stand facing each other or side by side, with space around each of you.
  3. Start the timer. Both do high knees for the interval, counting their own reps.
  4. At the end, call out your counts. The higher count wins the round.
  5. The partner with fewer reps calls the bonus length, up to the agreed limit.
  6. Both do the bonus together straight away.
  7. Rest, about a minute, then start the next round.
  8. After the last round, the partner who won more rounds has the bragging rights for the session.

Counting Reps

Count one rep each time the right knee comes up. Both partners use the same rule. Since each counts their own, honesty matters: only knee drives that reach the agreed height count. Agree the height before starting, usually the thigh level with the hip.

The Bonus

The bonus is the game’s twist. The partner with fewer reps decides how long it lasts, within the limit. A short bonus is kind to tired legs. A long one makes both partners work harder, including the partner calling it. Either way, both do it together, at their own best pace, with no counting and no winner. It is a shared final push.

Agree the longest bonus anyone can call before the first round. Twenty seconds is a sensible limit. It keeps the bonus a finisher and stops it turning into a second main interval.

If the counts are tied, both partners agree the bonus together.

How Fatigue Builds

Each round adds a main interval and a bonus. Over five rounds of 30 seconds with a 15-second bonus each, that is nearly four minutes of high knees with short rests. The knees start to drop and the feet start to slap the floor as the rounds go on. Both are signs to shorten the bonus or end the session.

Making It Fair

A less conditioned partner can drive the knees to a lower height, for example to the middle of the thigh, and still count each rep. Everything else about the round works as normal. Agree the height for each partner before starting. Training With a Friend has more on adjusting a rep standard fairly.

Staying Safe

  • A cleared, stable floor. No loose mats, cables or kit nearby.
  • Light feet. Land on the balls of the feet, quietly. Heavy, flat landings are hard on the shins.
  • Upright posture. Leaning back to lift the knees strains the lower back.
  • Stop if anything hurts. Stopping ends the round. No bonus is owed.

Common Mistakes

  • Counting short knee drives. Only drives to the agreed height count.
  • Calling a huge bonus to make a point. The limit is there for a reason, and the caller does the bonus too.
  • Skipping the bonus after winning. Both do it, whoever won.
  • Too little rest between rounds. A minute keeps the work honest.

Fitting It Into a Session

Bonus Round works as a warm-up game at a gentle pace or as a short conditioning block in the middle of a session. Three to five rounds is plenty. It needs no equipment and suits any space with a good floor. Building a Partner Session has more on fitting it in.

Getting Better Over Time

Note each partner’s count per round. Over a few weeks, counts rise and stay higher in the later rounds. When both partners can hold their first-round count to the last round, lengthen the main interval a little.

FAQ

Can the partner with fewer reps skip the bonus?

No, every round ends with one. A short call, five or ten seconds, is a perfectly good choice on tired legs.

What if one partner has to stop during the bonus?

That is fine. The bonus is shared, not scored, so stopping costs nothing.

Should we face each other?

Facing each other helps with honest counting, since each can see the other’s knees.
