Fake Finish Wall Sit

4 minute read

Quick Intro

Fake Finish Wall Sit is a timed wall sit with a caller who likes a joke. One partner holds a wall sit. The other has the stopwatch and counts down toward the agreed hold time. Near the end, the caller may shout “done!” once or twice before the time is actually up. The holder stays in position until they hear the real finish, a phrase agreed in advance that the caller only ever uses for the real end. Then the partners swap.

There is no winner. The trick is meant to be funny, a small test of whether the holder stays focused until the true end. It is also a reminder that the end of a set comes when it comes, which helps in any timed hold.

How to hold a good wall sit, back flat to the wall and knees over the ankles, is taught at Wall Sit. This guide covers the game: agreeing the real finish, using fakes well and keeping it light.

What You’ll Need

  • Two people.
  • A clear, flat wall.
  • A non-slip floor.
  • A stopwatch or phone timer.

How It Works

  1. Agree the hold time, for example 45 seconds, and the real finish phrase, for example “time, stand up”.
  2. The holder sets up in a wall sit.
  3. The caller starts the timer and counts down out loud, at least for the last part of the hold.
  4. Near the end, the caller may shout “done!” before the time is up. The holder stays put.
  5. When the time is really up, the caller says the agreed finish phrase.
  6. The holder stands up.
  7. Rest and swap roles.

The Real Finish

The real finish phrase is the heart of the game. It must be something the caller never uses as a fake. “Time, stand up” works well. So does a phrase plus a clap. The fake is always the single word “done!”, so the holder knows exactly what to listen for.

Once the real finish is called, the caller confirms it clearly, so the holder never wonders whether it is another trick. If the holder is unsure, they can ask “real?” and the caller answers honestly.

Using Fakes Sparingly

A fake finish is funny once or twice in a hold. Used too often, it stops being playful and becomes irritating. A few guidelines:

  • One or two fakes per hold at most.
  • Only near the end. A fake at ten seconds is not much of a trick.
  • Read your partner. If they are not enjoying it, drop the fakes and simply count down.
  • Some holds with no fakes at all. It keeps the holder guessing.

The holder can also ask for no fakes at all, for any reason. The game works without them.

Stopping for Real Fatigue

The holder can stop the hold at any time for real fatigue or discomfort. The game never asks anyone to push past a real limit. A holder who stands up early has simply ended their hold, and the partners swap as normal.

Making It Fair

Choose a hold time the holder can manage with some reserve, so the fakes come while they still have control. For a partner who is new to wall sits, use a shorter hold and fewer fakes, or none. Training With a Friend has more on fitting a game to each partner.

Staying Safe

  • Stop for real fatigue at any time. The game is never a reason to keep holding.
  • Breathe steadily. Holding the breath while waiting for the finish is easy to do and best avoided.
  • A non-slip floor. Feet that slide forward drop the body suddenly.
  • Rise smoothly at the end. Press through the feet. Dropping out sideways strains the knees.

Common Mistakes

  • Too many fakes. One or two is the limit.
  • A finish phrase that sounds like a fake. Make the real one distinct.
  • A hold that is too long. The joke only works while the holder is still in control.
  • Teasing a struggling holder. If they are shaking hard, call the real finish.

Fitting It Into a Session

Fake Finish Wall Sit is a light-hearted finisher for a leg session, or a fun break between harder sets. Two or three holds each is plenty. It suits friends who like a bit of mischief in their training. For where a short leg finisher sits in a full partner session, see Building a Partner Session.

Getting Better Over Time

As the hold gets easier, lengthen it a little. The fakes stay the same: light and occasional. Over a few sessions, both partners usually find the fakes stop working, which is a sign of good focus.

FAQ

What if the holder stands up on a fake?

Nothing happens. It is a laugh, not a penalty. They can sit back down to finish, or call the hold done.

Can the holder see the timer?

Agree it first. Most pairs keep the timer out of sight, so the holder relies on the caller.

Is this safe for beginners?

Yes, with a shorter hold and no fakes until they are comfortable with the wall sit.
