Superman Hold Bet

4 minute read

Quick Intro

Superman Hold Bet takes the Superman, a posterior chain exercise held face down with the arms and legs lifted off the floor at the same time. You both hold it together as a friendly, timed contest: whoever holds longer wins. What the stake is isn’t fixed here. It’s whatever your own agreed forfeit style says, settled before the hold begins.

For the full technique, see Superman.

What You’ll Need

No equipment, the same as a solo Superman hold.

How to Do It Together

  1. Set the wager first. Before lifting off the floor, settle the stake in line with your agreed forfeit style.
  2. Lift together. Both partners lift arms, chest and legs off the floor at the same time.
  3. Hold your own hold. Each partner’s turn ends individually, whenever that partner lowers back down.
  4. Settle it. Whoever held longer wins, and the stake follows whatever your agreed style says.

Breathe steadily throughout. Holding your breath works against you here as much as it would in a solo hold.

Why the Stake Isn’t Written In

Every couple has their own forfeit style, agreed once and reused for every bet like this one. The actual stake stays personal to your relationship, never a fixed script every couple using this exercise gets handed the same way. This guide can describe the contest, but never what you specifically agree on as the stake.

A Superman hold varies with body type and natural flexibility, which is why the fairness scaling below measures a win against each partner’s own typical time rather than a flat comparison. Without that, one partner could be set up to lose almost every time for reasons that have nothing to do with effort.

Worth watching for over time, beyond any single bet: if the same partner is always the one collecting and the other is always the one giving, that’s the kind of one-sided pattern this format can drift into if nobody’s paying attention to it. Rotating which exercise you wager on, or letting the partner who’s been losing propose the next bet, keeps the whole thing from settling into one fixed direction.

How to keep a bet like this genuinely fun instead of letting it quietly build resentment over time, deciding forfeit terms together, and what to do if one of you keeps losing, is covered fully in Working Out Together.

If You’re at Different Fitness Levels

Both still building up hold time. Expect shorter holds on both sides. The same wager mechanic still works at that range, since the suspense comes from who outlasts whom, not from any specific number of seconds.

One partner naturally better at holds than the other. Measure the win against each partner’s own typical hold time, not a shared absolute one, so the bet stays genuinely contested from the start. Agree on each partner’s usual time beforehand, so there’s a real baseline to beat.

Keep the neck neutral, eyes toward the floor, not craning upward. Stop the hold if real lower back discomfort develops, a different feeling from ordinary working fatigue.

Every connection moment in these exercises is something either partner can skip or scale back at any point, including this one, no explanation needed. Hold the Superman together with no bet attached if competing isn’t what you want.

FAQ

Is the stake always a kiss? Not necessarily. Whatever your agreed forfeit style says is what applies, and that can be a kiss, something else affectionate or anything else you have both chosen.

What if we haven’t agreed on a forfeit style yet? Set one before trying this exercise. The wager only works once there’s a real, agreed stake behind it.

Do we need to decide the stake fresh every time we do this? No. A forfeit style is agreed once and reused for every bet like this one, so you only need to settle it the first time, not before each round.

Isn’t this unfair if one of us naturally holds longer? Only if you measure it as an absolute time. Measuring each partner against their own usual hold time keeps the contest fair regardless of who’s naturally stronger here.

Where should we look during the hold? At the floor, with the neck neutral and not craned upward. Looking up to check on your partner can strain the neck, so keep your eyes down and stop if the lower back starts to hurt, which is different from ordinary tiring.

Can we just hold it together with no bet at all? Yes. Superman on its own is the same hold, with no wager attached.
