Hip Hold Bridge Kiss
Quick Intro
Hip Hold Bridge Kiss uses bridge pose, a supine hold that lifts the hips off the floor. The assisting partner rests both hands lightly at the hips as the other partner lifts into the bridge, leaning down for a kiss at the peak of the lift before both lower back down together, hip contact maintained the whole way.
Setu Bandha Sarvangasana covers the pose’s full technique on its own.
What You’ll Need
No equipment.
How to Do It Together
- Get into position. One partner lies supine, beginning the bridge pose setup, while the other kneels close at their side or above their hips.
- Guide the lift. The assisting partner rests both hands lightly at the hips as the lying partner lifts into the bridge.
- Meet at the peak. At the top of the lift, the assisting partner leans down for a kiss.
- Lower together. Bring the bridge back down together, hip contact unbroken through the movement.
Exhale on the lift into the kiss, inhale lowering back down.
Why the Hands Guide the Lift Without Lifting It
Bridge Pose Witness has both partners hold the bridge at the same time and stay present for each other. This exercise gives one partner a more active job, resting their hands at the hips of the other, but the core is the same: the hips do the lifting, and the hands only follow.
A light hip hold through the lift gives the lying partner a steady point of reference as the hips rise, something to feel moving against as the bridge comes up, without actually bearing any of that weight. It’s easy for an assisting hand to drift from guiding into pulling, especially right as the kiss happens and attention shifts toward meeting each other and away from tracking the lift itself. Keeping the hold light through that exact moment is what keeps the exercise doing what it’s meant to do, even as the pull toward holding on tighter gets stronger.
The kiss landing specifically at the peak gives the whole rep a clear high point to build toward. That timing is part of why this feels different from a sustained witnessed hold: the payoff here comes at a single repeated instant each rep, a different shape from one long shared stretch of effort.
If You’re at Different Fitness Levels
A couple with a lower baseline overall can use a lower bridge height, with the hip hold and kiss trigger unchanged either way. Since one partner is always the one assisting, the structure already accounts for any difference in bridge strength between the two of you without needing a separate scaled version.
Safety and Consent
Standard bridge pose cautions apply. Never pull on the hips to force a higher lift. Agree beforehand that the assisting partner’s hands will rest at the hips.
Every connection moment in these exercises is something either partner can skip or scale back at any point, including this one, no explanation needed. A bridge pose rep with no hip hold or kiss is the unadorned exercise.
FAQ
Do we swap roles? Yes, if both of you are comfortable with the bridge. Take turns lying and assisting so each of you has both jobs, and keep the hip hold light each time.
Are the assisting partner’s hands supposed to help lift the hips? No. The hold is there to guide and stay in contact with the lift, not to carry any of the weight. The lying partner’s own strength does the actual work.
What separates this from the witnessed version of bridge pose? Bridge Pose Witness has both partners hold the bridge together through a sustained hold. This exercise has one partner’s hands following the other’s hips through each rep, and the payoff lands as a kiss at the peak rather than over a long hold.
What if the hip hold starts turning into a pull right as the kiss happens? Keep the hands light through that moment on purpose. It’s a natural pull to lean into, but the hold should still just be tracking the lift, not adding force to it.
Does the kiss have to happen on every single rep? That’s the default, but you can agree on a kiss every third rep instead for a longer set.
What if one of us has a much higher bridge than the other’s comfortable range? That’s fine. Use a lower bridge height for whichever partner needs it, and the hip hold and kiss timing work exactly the same regardless of how high the lift actually goes.
Can we just do bridge pose without the hip hold and kiss? Yes. Setu Bandha Sarvangasana on its own is the same lift, with nothing extra attached.
Built on Setu Bandha Sarvangasana. Bridge Pose Witness stays present through a sustained hold instead of meeting at the peak of each rep.
