Burpee Count Wager

4 minute read

Quick Intro

Burpee Count Wager uses the burpee, a full-body exercise combining a squat, a push-up and a jump into one rep. You both perform as many clean burpees as possible within an agreed time cap, and whoever lands more wins a stake set by your own agreed forfeit style.

For the full technique behind the exercise itself, see Burpees.

What You’ll Need

No equipment. Enough space for both partners to move without colliding, and a way to track the time cap.

How to Do It Together

  1. Pick your stake. Before starting, both partners choose their stake in line with your agreed forfeit style.
  2. Decide how long you’re working. Pick a duration together ahead of time, for example sixty seconds.
  3. Work the full time cap. Both partners perform as many full burpees as possible within the time cap.
  4. Compare counts. Whoever completed more clean reps wins the wager.

Breathe as needed at this pace. This is a demanding, high-effort set.

Why Fatigue Makes This Wager Harder to Referee Honestly

A burpee asks for full-body coordination under real fatigue, which makes this a harder wager to self-judge honestly than a calmer rep-count contest. Sit-Up Count Wager lets you count reps at a controlled pace with breath to spare. This one doesn’t. By the second half of a hard sixty-second set, counting accurately while your own form is starting to slip takes real presence of mind, which is exactly when a rep is most likely to get counted even though the push-up or the jump got shortened.

That’s worth naming to each other before you start, not after one of you notices a questionable rep. Agreeing in advance that a shortened push-up or a missed jump doesn’t count, and that you’ll both hold yourselves to that standard even when you’re exhausted and chasing the win, keeps the contest honest without turning it into a dispute mid-set.

The time pressure also changes who might win compared to a hold-based wager. A couple with similar strength and similar hold times can land on different burpee counts, since conditioning for a fast, repeated full-body movement develops somewhat separately from raw strength or static endurance. That gap isn’t a sign anything’s wrong between you.

If You’re at Different Fitness Levels

The win condition is measured as percentage improvement over each partner’s own recent average rather than an absolute rep count, which keeps the wager fair across a real fitness gap. Reduce the burpee to a step-back, no-push-up, step-up version for either or both partners if the full movement isn’t realistic yet, using the same wager mechanic at a scaled rep range.

Reps only count with full range of motion. Don’t let the wager incentivize skipping the push-up or the jump just to win. Land softly and watch spacing between partners throughout, and stop before form breaks down significantly rather than pushing for one more rep.

Every connection moment in these exercises is something either partner can skip or scale back at any point, including this one, no explanation needed. A regular timed burpee set with no wager is always on offer if you don’t feel like betting.

FAQ

What counts as a clean rep? A full burpee with the squat, the push-up and the jump. Reps only count with full range of motion.

What is the easier version? A step-back, no-push-up, step-up burpee, with the same wager mechanic at a scaled rep range.

How do we keep spacing safe? Give each other enough room that you never collide, land softly and stop before form breaks down significantly.

How does this stack up against Sit-Up Count Wager’s time-based format? The mechanic is similar to Sit-Up Count Wager, but burpees demand full-body coordination under real fatigue, which makes honest rep-counting harder to sustain through a full set than a controlled sit-up pace allows.

What if we disagree on whether a rep counted? Agree in advance on what counts as a full rep, specifically that a shortened push-up or missed jump doesn’t, and hold each other to that standard even late in a hard set.

Is there a fixed-stake version of this same wager, like a guaranteed kiss? Yes. Kiss Count Wager fixes the forfeit as a kiss whatever your usual forfeit style, if you’d rather not use your own for this one.

What if one of us is clearly fitter at burpees specifically? Use the percentage-improvement scaling above. Measuring each partner against their own baseline keeps the contest fair even with a real gap in burpee ability.

Is sixty seconds a required time cap? No. Sixty seconds is only an example. Any time cap you agree on together works just as well.

Can we just do burpees for time without the wager? Yes. Burpees on its own works fine with no stake attached.

Built on Burpees. Sit-Up Count Wager uses a calmer, more controlled exercise for the same agreed-stake wager format.
