Bear Crawl Race

4 minute read

Quick Intro

Bear Crawl Race turns the bear crawl, a hovering crawl on hands and feet with the knees held off the floor, into a short distance race. Both partners pick their stake in line with your agreed forfeit style, then crawl to a fixed marker, for example ten meters, with the first to arrive winning the wager.

The crawl’s own full technique is covered at Bear Crawl.

What You’ll Need

A clear, non-slip stretch of floor and a way to mark a fixed distance, a doorway or a piece of furniture works fine as the finish line.

How to Do It Together

  1. Pick the stake. Choose your stake beforehand in line with your agreed forfeit style.
  2. Line up. Both partners start side by side in the bear crawl position.
  3. Race. Crawl to the fixed marker or distance as fast as you can manage.
  4. Claim the win. Whoever reaches the marker first wins the wager.

Breathe as needed at this pace, this is a short sprint rather than a controlled tempo set.

Why This Tends to End in Laughing

Bear Crawl Hold Witness holds this same hovering crawl side by side, and Carry and Crawl Sync pairs the crawl with a farmer’s carry, both at a steadier pace. This one is the opposite: speed is the point, and the wager gives it a competitive edge.

That said, a bear crawl is a slower, clumsier movement than most people expect going in. Keeping the hips low and the back flat genuinely limits how fast either partner can actually move. In practice this tends to produce more laughing at how awkward the whole thing looks than any real competitive tension, which is a fine outcome for an exercise built around a wager rather than a serious test of fitness.

The head start built into the version for mismatched partners helps keep the race contested. Calibrating it to the real pace gap between you gives each of you a real chance at winning, which a flat, even start wouldn’t for a mismatched couple.

A short, clearly marked distance also matters more here than it might in a standing sprint. Ten meters on hands and feet takes longer to cover than it would standing, so erring on the shorter side for a first attempt is worth doing.

If You’re at Different Fitness Levels

A shorter distance with knees allowed to touch down between steps keeps the race fair for a couple building up to the full hover. A weaker partner can also take a head start distance calibrated to the real pace gap between you, keeping the outcome genuinely uncertain either way.

Watch for a slippery floor, hands and feet need reliable grip at speed. Keep the back flat rather than letting the hips pike up to move faster, and leave a lane’s width between you so you don’t collide.

Every connection moment in these exercises is something either partner can skip or scale back at any point, including this one, no explanation needed. Crawling the same distance side by side with no race or stake is a full version whenever competing isn’t wanted.

FAQ

How does this compare with the other bear crawl exercises? Bear Crawl Hold Witness holds this same position still and together. This one turns the crawl into a timed race with a wager attached.

Why does this usually end up more funny than competitive? Bear crawling fast is genuinely awkward, keeping the hips low and the back flat limits speed more than people expect going in, which tends to produce more laughing than real tension.

What determines the stake? Your agreed forfeit style, chosen beforehand, decides what the winner actually gets. Settling on it before the race begins keeps the finish line itself simple.

What if one partner is clearly faster? A head start distance calibrated to the real pace gap between you keeps the outcome genuinely uncertain for both of you, with a real chance at winning on either side.

How long should the race distance actually be? Shorter than it looks at first glance. Ten meters on hands and feet takes longer than the same distance walking, so erring short for a first attempt is worth doing.

How should we breathe during the race? Breathe whenever you need to. The race is a short sprint and not a controlled tempo set, so there is no pattern to follow.

What floor works best for the race? A dry, non-slippery surface where hands and feet grip reliably. Check it before you start, since a slick floor is the main hazard in a race on all fours.

Can we just crawl together with no race? Yes. Bear Crawl alone is the plain crawl, with no race or wager attached.
